INFORMATION

Dutch bravado

The Bätz-Witte organ of the Grote Kerk in Gorinchem was inaugurated in September 1853. During the festive opening, the organ was played by the organists J.A. van Eijken and D.H. Dijkhuizen and S.A. Apple. The first design of this organ dates from 1851. It is the first three-manual organ with a Rugwerk built by the Utrecht organ builder Christian Gottlieb Friedrich Witte. It is also his first design in the Romanesque style. He was inspired for the front by a design for a new organ in the Zuiderkerk in Rotterdam (1850). His fellow townsman, the Utrecht sculptor Joannes Rijnbout, made the three statues that adorn the main organ case. For this organ, Witte used pipes from an organ built by Johann Heinrich Hartmann Bätz. Built in 1761, this organ was made for the then Grote Kerk in Gorinchem. However, the building was demolished due to poor condition. Bätz, in turn, had used pipework, made by Stephanus Cousijns. Cousijns’ pipework dated from 1666. Most of the pipework of the Hoofdwerk and Bovenwerk dates from 1761. The reeds of the Hoofdwerk and Bovenwerk also have boots, blocks and wedges from 1761.
